The Arava region is one of the last that approximates Israeli wilderness. Hyper-arid and still largely unsettled, the Arava provides a quiet refuge for contemplative solitude by Israelis and visitors who enjoy the vast, quiet landscapes and the wildlife that call the desert home.

But development pressures are already felt in this undeveloped region and plans are on the table that would damage or destroy “biodiversity” hot spots, whose unique conditions contribute to rich concentrations of flora and fauna.
Sababa – “A Healthy Environment for the Arava” is a community organization comprised of kibbutz members who live in the Arava. It has begun to explore alternative planning options, where natural “hot spots” can be prioritized for preservation and development directed to areas where ecological damage will be minimal.

The Tal Fund has made a grant to Sababa’s proactive “sustainable development” program, supporting a unique biodiversity survey for the preservation of “Samar sand dunes” and its natural inhabitants.
