Israel suffers from acute air pollution problems. Epidemiological studies suggest that poor ambient air quality contributes to widespread morbidity and over 1000 premature deaths each year. Part of the problem is legal — the law that regulates air pollution in Israel was written in 1961 and is outdated.

For some years it was apparent that new legislation needed to be drafted and in 2005 a new proposed “Clean Air Law” was submitted to the Knesset for a preliminary vote. After the bill passed the initial readings, it suddenly encountered ardent objections by industry lobbyists and associated government ministries.
Green Course
Green Course, Israel’s university environmental network has emerged as one of the most creative and powerful new initiatives in Israel’s environmental movement. At their request, the Tal Fund has provided support for a coordinator who will lead student involvement in creating a public campaign to support passage of the air legislation and raise awareness about the severity of air pollution problems in Israel.
